Five Tips to Achieve your Goals – Grow yOur Abundant Life

I speak to a lot of people who simply are not achieving the goals they set for themselves. This creates frustration and stress. Sustained stress on a regular basis is a serious health hazard and often leads to depression. Depression affects 1/5 people, cancer 1/3 and heart disease is also 1/3 people. I’m not saying that reaching your goals cures life threatening disease – but it surely helps to create confident happy feelings.  The state of our physical body and the energy we radiate is a direct reflection of what’s happening on the inside.  If life is meant to be joyous, happy and free, why is this not true for so many of us?

Personal development books, courses, seminars, life coaches, healers and therapists are in massive demand. Everyone is looking for ways to feel better and be happier. We have a natural drive to feel fulfilled and connected and to seek pleasure and purpose and avoid pain. It’s natural for human beings to set goals and want things we don’t have.

From my observations and learnings there seem to be 5 main roadblocks to reaching your goals and leading a happy healthy life. And these blocks all live in our wonderful minds.

1.Thoughts & Beliefs

Our minds are full of thoughts and beliefs – old, new, borrowed, inherited, conscious and sub-conscious. We have a bank of experiences that we draw from to give meaning to the things we experience.  It’s not what happens to us that causes pain or joy but the meaning we attach to the event. Have you ever set a goal and really really wanted it and affirmed it and taken massive action toward it (at least for a little while) – and then missed out. The goal did not eventuate. I know that feeling – and then the negative  barrage of thoughts and feelings of anger and disappointment follows. “See – nothing ever goes right for me, I never get what I want, what’s the point of trying when it’s never worked in the past?” Does this sound familiar?

Our core beliefs will either support us or stop us from achieving what it is we say we want. We can have a strong desire for something but if our core beliefs are that we are not worthy or deserving of success and happiness or wealth and freedom or whatever it is we say we want – then the goal will not manifest.

“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve”. Napoleon Hill

This is the truth. Developing new thinking and doing different actions is the secret. Most people find this difficult to do alone. The help of an effective coach can help uncover these belief roadblocks which are robbing you of reaching your goals and experiencing health and happiness. A great coach will be your accountability partner and help you change.

2.Decisiveness & Accountability

The second thing I notice is that people who do not reach their goals often do not take responsibility for their choices. A non-decision is an indirect way of giving control to others and to your sub-conscious. “I don’t know what I want, I don’t know what to do, What if I decide the wrong thing, what if it doesn’t work out, what if I fail?” These thoughts are roadblocks for sure. The simple but not easy response to this is – make a decision, see what happens and then make a new decision if you don’t like the outcome. Fear is the biggest roadblock to making choices. Decisions and choices create action which generates change. So it follows then that no decision means no action and thus no self-directed change. This option leaves you at the mercy of other people’s decisions and choices. Not making decisions means you give your power to others. And if you want the real secret to achieving your goals? Be accountable to yourself and at least one other person – this helps you stay committed to the journey. Make it hard for yourself to give up. Ask for help to stay accountable.

3.  Confidence

Confidence is energy. How you think and feel about yourself consciously and unconsciously, your self-esteem, your sense of self-worth – these things determine the quality of the energy you give out. Underneath how you look and feel – how are you speaking to yourself? Are you using kind loving words of encouragement and positive expectation? Do you take time to reflect on your self-talk? Our physiology needs to be aligned with our thoughts. Mental activity is a form of behaviour. If your mind is not confident your body cannot be fooled – and nor are other people. Confidence can be learnt – and it is created – not found. This point I find very intriguing. We are responsible for creating our own confidence. Again this takes conscious effort and often a skilled coach will help you manifest this faster.

4. Clarity of Desire

Be clear about what you want – keep working on this question in all areas of your life. If you don’t you will be at the mercy of the old thought patterns, beliefs and references. The mind needs a focus – if you don’t consciously give it something it will regurgitate same old same old. Up to you. Not being clear about your true wants is actually harmful. Without clarity about who you are and what you want in life you are giving your power away. And it’s been shown time and time again that goal-directed action with positive outcome expectation together produces better results than non-goal-directed action. We are all busy. Are you clear about where you are going and when you are going to get there?

5. Contribution

We have to look beyond ourselves for true lasting happiness and health. Have you considered that your story, your energy, your resources can help others? Or are you so self-absorbed with the wrongs in your life, or too busy trying to hold everything together in your own world that you don’t have availability for others? Not happy? Check-in with your attitude toward helping others. How have you added value to your world and the people around you today? Contribution is the best way to feel connected – this is a basic human need.
